I run the production side of a six-person custom-goods shop in Phoenix, and I manage our equipment budget. When we added an xTool M1 Ultra in January 2025, I did what I always do: I tracked every accessory, every failed test cut, and every setup hour. Can the xTool M1 Ultra really engrave glass?

Yes, but not the way the demo clips make it look. A blue diode laser passes straight through clear glass if the surface is bare, so the machine cannot simply engrave raw glass in one pass. What works for us is a small prep step: apply a thin heat-absorbing coating to the glass first, let the laser do its work, and wash the piece off afterward. You get a soft, frosted mark that feels permanent. Skip the prep and you will mostly waste your time.

This is one of those cases where the conventional wisdom is only half right. Everything I had read before buying said diode lasers cannot engrave glass, full stop. The accurate version is that they cannot do it without prep. Once we adjusted our workflow, glass became one of our higher-margin jobs rather than a job we outsourced.

The cost lesson was simple: practice on cheap glass first. A dollar-store tumbler is the right place to dial in settings. A box of personalized tumblers for a client order is not.

Why does this matter to a budget? Because a charred edge means sanding time, and sanding time is labor. A remelted acrylic edge means a rejected part and a re-cut. Both are costs that never show up on an invoice. To be fair, a shop that only engraves might not notice much difference. If you plan to cut wood or acrylic on a regular basis, make sure your M1 Ultra package includes air assist, or budget for it as an add-on before you place the order.

Is the free laser engraving software really free?

Our shop runs the M1 Ultra on xTool Creative Space, usually shortened to XCS. Downloading it costs nothing, and the core workflows for laser engraving, laser cutting, blade cutting, and the rotary tool all work without a subscription or a license key. I half expected the free software to watermark my files or nag me into a paid tier by day thirty. That did not happen in our first quarter.

Free has limits, though. XCS is not a full design program. We create vectors in Inkscape, which is also free, and import the SVG files into XCS when we need clean layouts. If you want advanced features like optimized toolpaths or deeper control over machine settings, most xTool users eventually look at LightBurn, which is a one-time license rather than a subscription. For our workflow, the combination of Inkscape and XCS has been enough.

One caution: download the software from xTool's official site. A search for free laser engraving software returns plenty of third-party download pages with bundled extras, and none of those are worth the malware risk.

How good is the M1 Ultra as a laser cutting machine for wood?

Pretty good, with a material caveat. As a laser cutting machine for wood, the M1 Ultra handles the thin stock our shop actually uses: birch plywood, basswood, poplar, bamboo sheets, thin walnut, and similar materials. Baltic birch plywood has been the most consistent for us. It cuts cleanly and does not surprise us with voids or uneven glue lines.

Wood is a broad category, and that is where expectations go wrong. Craft plywood from a big-box store can contain voids that cause blowouts, and some exotic hardwoods cut so slowly that the machine hour is not worth it. We also avoid mystery boards with unknown finishes because the coatings can produce nasty fumes. Most of our work fits in the 1.5 mm to 6 mm range; beyond that, we use a different tool.

Here is the thing: a laser cutter is not a universal wood shop. It is excellent for flat, thin, detailed parts. It is not the machine I reach for when a job needs thick lumber or structural strength. Knowing that boundary keeps the M1 Ultra busy and keeps our costs low.

Can you laser engrave brass with the M1 Ultra?

Honestly, not usually, and I would rather tell you that now than let you wreck a box of expensive brass blanks. Polished brass reflects the blue laser beam instead of absorbing it, so a raw brass sheet tends to come out with no mark, or with an uneven heat stain, no matter how many passes you try.

The practical exception is coated brass. Brass that has a dark coating will engrave in the sense that the laser removes the coating to expose the metal underneath. That works for nameplates, tags, and small plaques, and it may be the look most customers actually want. But a deep engraving into raw, uncoated brass is a different job. Metal engraving shops usually use a fiber laser for that, not a diode machine.

Honestly, I am not sure why some product demos make brass look easy. My best guess is that they use coated brass or a different type of laser and simply do not mention it. If a customer asks for raw brass engraving, we quote it as an outsourced job. That is cheaper than buying a fiber laser and much cheaper than redoing a ruined order.

What did the M1 Ultra actually cost in the first quarter?

The machine was the cheapest part of the first quarter. Our cost tracking showed four buckets that do not appear on the product page:

Does the 4-in-1 design actually pay off?

This is the question I got wrong in my own planning. Everything I had read about multifunction machines said they compromise on every function. I started with that assumption. In practice, the M1 Ultra runs as a laser engraver and cutter for most of the week, and then the blade cutter and rotary attachment take over for tasks that would otherwise sit in our outsourced pile.

The blade cutter was the surprise. I nearly wrote it off as a gimmick, but it is genuinely useful for cutting cardstock, leather, adhesive stencils, and other materials that do not need a laser. Running those jobs on the blade attachment saves laser time, avoids burned edges, and keeps the production line moving.

The rotary attachment earns its keep on mug and tumbler orders. Once the cylinder is loaded, engraving is repeatable, which matters when a customer orders forty identical pieces. Setup time is lower than our old jig method.

Would I buy it again? For a small shop that takes mixed custom work, yes. The money is not just in the laser; it is in the range of jobs one tool can handle before lunch. That range is what makes the cost per job work.
